In the United States, seafood seasoning became more distinct in the 19th and 20th centuries. Maryland and Louisiana developed bold, spicy blends that became iconic. Old Bay Seasoning: Created in 1939 by Gustav Brunn, a German immigrant in Baltimore, Old Bay became synonymous with Chesapeake Bay seafood, especially crabs and shrimp. The blend includes celery salt, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, and other spices.
I created Becca's Seafood Seasoning years ago when I wanted to have a great tasting seasoning that was homemade and also didn't have so much salt. I think this does the trick. This seasoning has a unique flavor that helps spice up any dish.
Mix all the ingredients until well combined. Store for up to 6 months in a well-sealed container.
Makes ½ cup
1 tablespoon ground bay leave
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon table salt
2 teaspoons celery seed
1½ teaspoons dry mustard
1½ teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon ground mace
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
