Where it all began...

CrabPlace.com, Inc. has been delivering premium seafood from dock to door for almost 30 years. Founder Greg Cain started the company in 1996, inspired by the new possibilities of the internet. From a simple website built at home, he pioneered online seafood sales, making his first crab shipment to Utah. Overcoming early challenges, including packaging mishaps and everything a small business faces, Greg expanded the business, rebranding as The Crab Place in 1997. Today, the company operates from its permanent home in Crisfield, Maryland, continuing its legacy of providing high-quality seafood to customers nationwide.

Our 1996 Website

In 1996, Greg Cain launched the first website dedicated to selling seafood online. At the time, he had no idea that his passion for sharing the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay would grow into a thriving business, now employing around 20 people year-round and more than 60 during the summer. This success also led to the creation of our Crab & Cruise experience, which welcomes guests from across the country to Crisfield, Maryland, for an unforgettable crab feast. Since then, CrabPlace.com has brought joy to countless customers, helping them celebrate with loved ones over premium seafood and cherished family traditions.

In the mid-1990s, Greg Cain, a network administrator, envisioned using the emerging internet to deliver fresh Maryland crabs nationwide. He built a basic website, Chesapeake Crab Co., before rebranding as CrabPlace.com in 1997. Early challenges included rudimentary online ordering and packaging issues. Greg's mother, Charlotte Scott, played a pivotal role by securing a loan with her house as collateral and assisting in operations. Despite initial struggles, their dedication led to the company's success. By 2002, CrabPlace.com earned the Maryland Entrepreneurial Success of the Year award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Today, it stands as a testament to family commitment and innovation in online seafood sales.
